Home Remodeling for Multi-Generational Families
It is a proven fact today that, especially in New Jersey, millennials are moving back in with Mom and Dad. This means that homes have even more of a need for space and more common living areas. Now in addition to young adults continuing to stay at home, there are also families that have older generations such as grandparent(s) living under the same roof as well. With so much company, there is only so much room! Most homes today are also renovated or have additions. This not only amps up their resale price but it makes them more functional for such occasions. Remodeling your home is also a costly job, so if you aren’t prepared for a whole makeover, we have come up with some tips to cut down the costs and still get the room and space everyone needs!
Privacy
The #1 issue for anyone living under the same roof is having their privacy! When you have your 25 year-old in the same living room watching TV with grandma, I highly doubt there will be a mutual agreement on what channel to watch. The more people, the greater the need for separation. You can either make a bedroom a small TV room with a couch, you could renovate the basement to accommodate living space for a bedroom and living room in one.
Bigger Communal Areas
When so many people live in the same home. Simple parts of the day could become chaotic such as dinner time. With everyone herding to the kitchen and dinner table, your space could be elbow to elbow. A simple idea to make more space, should your home allow for it, would be to create an open floor plan. Open floor plans are increasingly more popular than ever. Most modern homes have this layout to create more space and bigger looking rooms. In this case, we will need it for functionality!
Think Outside of the Home
As multi-generational homes increase, the more traditional homes go out the window. If your home has a garage, whether it be 1 or 2 Cars, Attached or Unattached, you could create a living space out of it! Take the necessary precautions and steps to make it a comfortable living space no matter the season or weather and you are set.
Another idea would be to create a Mini-Home in your backyard. This is also quite a popular idea for homes with the yards to allow it. It has been done before for either new couples or older generations living with family. You could create a beautiful living space with all of the necessary amenities right in your backyard. This allows for complete and total privacy without most of the hassle.
Multi-Generational Homes are more popular now than ever, and experts say they will only increase. If you are struggling with home space- call Intellebuild for a free estimate or click here!
